Online/Social Tools: 5 Shades of Lipgloss

Post image for Online/Social Tools: 5 Shades of Lipgloss

I go through lipgloss like it’s nobody’s business. Women change shades to go with outfits, changing color depending on how sassy they feel. Social sharing, platforms and online tools are like lipgloss – but the concept and ideas stay and evolve. So what are my five shades of the moment?

Helvetireader
Helvetireader is a simple way to look at just unread feeds in the expanded view, using keyboard shortcuts instead of clicking on the screen. It’s a userscript that pares down Google Reader – and it’s also customizable through CSS to suit anyone’s needs.

Twitterfeed.com
Twitterfeed.com enables the user to automatically update their Twitter and/or Facebook with articles that you are reading. It pulls different RSS feeds that the user creates. You can also do specific keyword autotweeting, depending on what the article is about. Example: Insert your blog RSS feed URL to the settings, and you can set your accounts to automatically update when something new is posted.

Tungle (@tunglerocks)
Tungle is a great way to organize meetings – especially for those that are calendar based. It enhances your exisiting calendar and lets others schedule meetings with you – without having to sign up for the service. Their customer service is superb, as upon signing up, I received two e-mails and a shot out on Twitter.

Plancast
Plancast helps the user to share upcoming plans with friends and see what others are doing. It can be from anywhere to hours, days, weeks or months in advance. Many utilize conference tools to see who is attending – but what if every conference someone was attending was in one place?

TeuxDeux
Everyone is on the go, and online based applications are easier than ever (and not many use paper anymore.) TeuxDeux is a free, browser-based to-do application that enables the user to input daily tasks on a weekly basis. It’s uncluttered and lets the user check off done tasks.

What are your favorite tools? (and I don’t mean social media d-bags.)

I really enjoyed Helvetireader on Firefox, it made the Google Reader experience so much better. I also just got into Plancast, and I'm still exploring that.

As far as tools I'm digging right now? Hootsuite, Evernote, Wakoopa... that's probably it for now.

I've become a huge fan of Google Calendar, as it syncs over the air with my phone. I've become extremely depend on it now, almost too much.

I also love su.pr's suggest posting time feature. It aggregates the data from all the posts you submit through su.pr and suggest the best time to post each day based on that data, showing you when the most people will click through.

I also like HootSuite for its scheduling capabilities and ability to post to any/all of your social network accounts.

Those are the best that come to mind immediately :)

I'm really happy to see a post like this. The timing is great for me, as lately I've found myself constantly wondering what tools and sites other people in marketing/PR/communications are using. I would love to see an app where, as part of someone's online profile, they could list all the tools they're using and endorse: web browsers, social networks, phones, streaming radio, whatever someone's using to make life easier.

Anyways, thanks for the insight. Plancast looks like it could be really useful, I'm going to dive into that one.

Definitely going to check out Helvetireader and I might have to try out Twitterfeed again, too (wasn't working very well the first time I tested it out). Jackie mentioned it, but Dropbox is my favorite tool right now - I've got folders between personal computers, bosses, and friends - It's great. I've also been playing around with Prezi lately and not only is it fun, the final product generally comes out very impressive (I want to tell every student I know about it for their next presentation).

Heard lots of chatter about Prezi - I'm going to try it out, have a presentation on Friday. I'll let you know what I think. :)

Ah man I want to answer the social media d-bag tool question though! I'd never heard of TeuxDuex, but have been looking for a *free* tool along those lines, so I'm definitely checking that out! I'm definitely with Ashley and Emily and love all of my iGoogle widgets and Evernote is the bomb.com. I also like using PB Works to save passwords and just random information I want to keep private.

Another nifty tool is DropBox, which saves me the pain of emailing documents to myself when I'm working on stuff at home for work. You just put it in the folder and you can access it from any computer.

I'm like you, I have a thing for trying out new tools/programs. Thanks for sharing some good ones!

No problem. I don't usually do these types of posts, but I had tested out a couple cool ones that I wanted to share. Lots of people ask me what I use on a daily basis, I wanted to share a small sampling.

Never heard of DropBox, but I'm definitely going to try it out. Thanks!

Not sure if it counts as a specific tool but I have just in the past 6 months or so really harnessed the power of using my iGoogle. I utilize the gadgets so I have my Gmail, Google Reader, Twitter, and to-do list (plus weather and news gadgets) all on one page that I can leave open so I can keep track of what may be happening throughout the day without having to jump from one thing to the other. Plus I'm not going to lie ... I have the hamster gadget and there really is something hypnotic about watching my little hamster run on his wheel when I need a break.
  • laurenfernandez
I need to get better at using my iGoogle.... I'm terrible about just clearing my Reader because I've let it sit dormant forever. I think it'd be cool to have my news and weather gadgets all in the same place, but I bet a lot of my iPhone apps would sit dormant.
  • Emily B Verkruyse
I really love Evernote -- it's been the best program I've found for keeping my countless notes and lists, and it syncs with all of my devices.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm definitely interested in trying out Tungle and TeuxDeux.
  • Tim Jahn
I love Evernote as well. I use the desktop app coupled with the iPhone app to jot down blog post ideas, to do lists, Beyond The Pedway info, etc. I've definitely become reliant upon it!
  • laurenfernandez
I tried using Evernote, but ended up getting frustrated. Maybe i'm just not as intuitive as I thought. What kind of lists/notes do you use it for? Everything?
